After The Best Coffee? It Starts With The Water

Coffee, it would seem, is a very simple beverage: just grind some roasted coffee beans and add hot water. However, no matter how good the beans, achieving the perfect cup will remain elusive until the beans are presented with perfect water.

The human body is about 60% water, the perfect espresso is about 85 – 96 % water. Rarely, is water given much consideration even though consumers (who are expected to part with good money!) assume that the person selling the coffee will have done everything in their power to present their coffee to you perfectly.

While we tend to view tap water as being reasonably pure, it’s loaded with minerals that can influence coffee’s flavour (particularly if you live on the West Coast of South Australia!), not to mention the chlorine and fluoride added to most municipal water supplies.

Fortunately, it is not that difficult, in most cases, to correct flaws with the water being used to brew coffee. Testing and appropriate filtration can turn the most mineralised, hard water into the perfect medium for extracting amazing espresso or any other choice of brewing method.
