New Single Origin: Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Worka Hurea

New Single Origin: Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Worka Hurea

A truly expressive cup, full of fruity notes and complex flavours.

Ethiopia Yirgacheffe is one of the most iconic coffee-growing regions in the world and is considered a benchmark within the specialty coffee industry.

This reputation comes from its unique geographical and climatic conditions, often described as its high-altitude terroir, together with its deep genetic history. These characteristics are also why Ethiopian coffees are such an important part of our core coffee selection.

With all these distinctive characteristics in mind, we're excited to introduce our new Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Gedeb Worka Hurea Anaerobic Natural.

What Makes Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Coffee So Special?

Grown at over 2,200 metres above sea level, the coffee cherries experience a slower and more prolonged maturation process.

This allows sugars to develop and concentrate within the cherries, contributing to a beautifully balanced relationship between sweetness and acidity in the cup.

Combined with the region's distinctive growing conditions, this high-altitude environment helps produce the expressive and complex flavours that make Yirgacheffe coffees so highly regarded.

From Lalesa Coffee Drying Station to Your Cup

This particular lot comes from Lalesa Coffee Drying Station, where 115 smallholder growers from the villages of Hurea carefully select ripe coffee cherries.

The cherries are dried under the sun for around 25 days on traditional African raised beds.

This is what we refer to as the natural process: the coffee cherry is dried whole, with the fruit, pulp and mucilage still surrounding the seed.

During this process, the cherries are turned regularly to encourage even drying and minimise the risk of mould and unwanted fermentation.

When executed carefully, natural processing brings remarkable depth, sweetness and complexity to the finished coffee.

What Is Anaerobic Natural Coffee Processing?

What makes this particular Yirgacheffe even more interesting is its anaerobic fermentation stage.

The coffee cherries undergo 110 hours of anaerobic fermentation in plastic tanks, creating an environment designed to encourage fermentation and enhance the sugars and characteristics naturally present in the coffee.

The result is a distinctive spirit-like aroma, syrupy sweetness and rounded acidity, adding another layer of complexity to the natural characteristics of Ethiopian coffee.
